Pastor Mark’s Musings

Dear New Hope Family,

By the time you receive this letter, we will be closer to the beginning of our Lenten 2021 Season.  Lent is one of my favorite seasons of the Christian year.  Historically it is the time where candidates for baptism were prepared and educated for baptism and membership in the church.  In the “perfect world” we would be doing the same thing.  Preparing to receive members on Easter Sunday, newly baptized and ready to begin their life in the church.  However, we are far from the perfect world, especially following 2020.  But, our preparation for Easter can, and will take place, even in 2021.

You see, the Lenten Season allows us a time to prepare our lives for a new life in Christ.  It allows us to take a deep look at ourselves and evaluate and confess our sinful nature to God.  It allows us to spend time in prayer; both communally and individually, as we seek to strengthen our relationship with God in Jesus Christ.  As human beings we are always in need of reflection and preparation to lead a better life in Jesus Christ.  We are called on to confess our sins, turn our lives around and set the tone for a deeper walk with Christ.

Granted, we should be doing this all of the time in our Christian journey, but more so in the Season of Lent when we are called on to look deeply within ourselves and to confess our sinful nature to God who offers us unfailing grace through Jesus Christ.

I invite you to walk this Lenten journey this year.  To come be marked by the ashes of last year’s palms and move toward the Cross and the empty tomb on Easter morning. To look deeply within your lives as Christians who need to renew ourselves through the love and grace of Jesus Christ.

Sincerely in Christ,
Pastor Mark
